Darwin Lemoin Schleeman

Darwin L. Schleeman, 86, of Ogallala, died Thursday, June 16, 2016, in the Ogallala Community Hospital.

Darwin Lemoin Schleeman was born February 23, 1930, in Frontier County near Stockville, Nebr. He was the son of Dick and Bessie (Robinson) Schleeman. He was raised in the Curtis and Stockville area where he attended rural grade school. In 1948 he graduated from high school at the University of Nebraska School of Agriculture in Curtis.

He joined the United States Army in 1951 and served two years. In 1952 Darwin was wounded from shrapnel and received a purple heart.

Darwin married Merna Grace Woodring on August 2, 1957 and on August 1, 1959 they welcomed a daughter Tammy Kay. They lived in several communities, until settling in Ogallala in the early 1970's. Darwin worked for Nebraska Public Power district for 32 years, where he began as a lineman and retired as a hydro operator.

Darwin was active in the Curtis Gun Club. He enjoyed woodworking in his shop, camping and fishing, playing cards, and loving on his grandchildren. He loved to tell stories and reminisce with family and friends about days past and those that were to come. Darwin had a true heart for children and their smiles were guaranteed to give him one.

Preceding him in death were his parents, sister Jean Herman, and brother Marvin Schleeman.

Visitation will be Monday, June 20, from 1 to 6 p.m. in Draucker Funeral Home. The Graveside Service will be Tuesday, June 21, at 11 a.m. Central Time in Fort McPherson National Cemetery with military honors by Keith County Veterans Organization. Rev. Curtis Tschetter of Grace Point will officiate.

Survivors include his wife Merna of Ogallala; daughter Tammy (Kevin) Cole of Brule; brother Ronald Schleeman of Las Vegas, NV; granddaughter Kallan (Tim) Hill of Brule; grandsons: Korey Cole of Brule and Cody (Michelle) Cole of Kearney; three great-grandchildren: Bryson, Braelynn, & Braden , all of Kearney; sister-in-law Elaine Schleeman of Culbertson; and brother-in-law Ronnie Herman of Brady, and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial has been established in his memory for later designation.
