Maxine B. (Potter) Hammond

Maxine B. Hammond, 92, longtime Ogallala resident, died Monday, July 18, 2016, in the Ogallala Community Hospital.

Maxine B. Hammond was born November 30, 1923 in Washington, KS., to Lester T. and Faye (Blocker) Potter. She was one of a set of triplets; her sisters were Iline B. and Pauline B.

Maxine received her early schooling through seventh grade at Lamar, Nebraska. The family lived there for twelve years prior to moving to Ogallala in 1934. She finished her schooling in Ogallala Public Schools and graduated from high school in 1941.

Maxine worked as a clerk for Arterburn's Shoe Store in Ogallala for about six years and helped part time at the grocery store that her parents owned.

On October 2, 1948 Maxine married William Harvey Hammond in Ogallala. She was a homemaker and raised their children. From 1956 to 1959 she worked as a clerk for More Value. Maxine then was employed part time for Lee's Dime Store for two years.

After the death of her son in 1967 Maxine began working full time at TRW. During her eighteen and one half years there Maxine was a machine operator and later advanced to Quality Control. She held that position until her retirement in 1986.

Maxine enjoyed reading and crocheting and is a member of the Church of Christ.

Preceding her in death was her husband in July 1973, son Harvey Lee Hammond, brothers Leroy L. Potter and Charles D. Potter, sisters Pauline B. Potter, Ruthcile Washa, and Ilene Daigh, one great-great-grandchild and one step great-great-grandchild.

Survivors include four daughters: Laura (John) Lakey of Ore., Ruth (Norman) MacIntosh of Wyo., Helen (Arnold) Grafford of Nebr., and Donna (Ron) Sorensen of Colo.; two sons Don Hammond and Ernie (Sharon) Hammond, all of Nebr. Twelve grandchildren: Paul Lakey, Anita DeGraeve, David MacIntosh, Regina Kuhns, Dawn Wilcox, Justin Hammond, Deanna Hammond, Ryan Grafford, Megan Grafford, Cindy Smith, Travis Mullen, and Dustin Walker;
21 great-grandchildren; 13 great-great-grandchildren; nine step-great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews, and many friends.

Visitation will be Thursday, July 21, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. in Draucker Funeral Home.

The Funeral Service will be Friday, July 22, at 10 a.m. in the Ogallala Church of Christ with Bill Lewis officiating. The Service will be live streamed for those unable to attend.

Interment is in the Ogallala Cemetery. A memorial has been established in her memory. Online Condolences may be sent by signing the Guest Book
