David Clay Dykes, 59 years of age, of Holdrege, passed away following a brief battle with cancer on Friday, June 29, 2018 at his home in Holdrege, surrounded by his caregivers. David was born October 7, 1958 at Alliance, Nebraska, the son of Robert K. and Odeth I. (Huffman) Dykes. David grew up in the Arthur and Ogallala, Nebraska areas, and received his education from the New Hope Village at Sutherland, Nebraska, and the Educational Service Unit #16 in Ogallala. He was a member of the Episcopal faith, and was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Ogallala on September 21, 1977.

David lived in Ogallala until July 1, 1988, when he moved to Holdrege. He then became part of the Bethpage Mission family of Mosaic in Axtell, and then in 2002, he joined the Mid-Nebraska Individual Services family in Holdrege. While at Mid-Nebraska, David enjoyed staying active with various jobs which included the recycling center.
Once someone met David, they wouldn’t forget him! He was purely a one-of-kind individual. David enjoyed writing letters, and listening to music was a favorite past-time, especially Johnny Cash. His favorite meal was a cheeseburger, French fries, and a Coke. Throughout his 30 years at Mosaic and Mid-Nebraska, he formed many special relationships with the staff and residents, and they became his second family.

Survivors include: his three sisters: Eloise M. Dykes of Ogallala; Nancy M. Dykes of Oxford, Nebraska; and Doris L. Dykes of Axtell, Nebraska; nephew, Robert V. Dykes and his wife, Tina of Lincoln, Nebraska; and a host of other relatives and many friends.

Besides his parents; David was preceded in death by his grandparents; and three nieces: Rachel J. Frickson, Maria C. Dykes, and Sheena M. Dykes.

Visitation will be held on Monday, July 2, 2018 from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Nelson-Bauer Funeral Home in Holdrege.
