August Duane "Swede" Ervin

August Duane "Swede" Ervin, age 99, peacefully passed away on Saturday, March 25, 2023.

Swede was born in Keith County, Nebraska, on  June 7, 1923 to Harrison and Eva (Chingren) Ervin.

Swede graduated from Ogallala High School in 1943.  He and Joanne Hillyer were married on August 23, 1944 making their home north of Brule.  Swede Joined the U.S. Navy in 1943 serving on the U.S.S. North Carolina in the Pacific.  He was honorably discharged in 1945.  After serving in the Navy he began farming in Keith County and continued to do so into his 80's.

Swede is survived by his children Christie Hansen (Lyle) of Cheyenne, WY; Susan Ervin of Okalahoma City, OK; John Ervin (Joan) of Brule, NE; grandchidren Brenda Nunemann (Brett) of Fredrick, CO; Chad Newport (Tara) of North Platte, NE; Jason Ervin (Anaai) of Belfast, Ireland; Rick Metcalf (Julie) of McCook, NE; Christopher Espinoza (Susan) of Oklahoma City, OK; Colleen Ervin of Aurora, CO; Brian Ervin (Rachel) of Ogallala, NE; Matt Ervin of Juniata, NE; 12 great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Joanne, his parents, and his sisters and brothers :  Wilma, Ruth, Clifford, Glenn, Kenneth, and Donald.

Memorial services will be held Thursday, March 30, 2023 , 10:00 a.m. at the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Ogallala, NE with Reverend Lisa Hadler officiating.  Burial will be at a later date at the Ft. McPherson National Cemetery in Maxwell, NE.

Military Honors by the Keith County Veteran Honor Guard Team.

Memorials are suggested to the Perkins County Animal Shelter.
